Friday 01.31.2014

First month, done.

Had a great day with Jeremy and Matilda--Jenny had to work.

Jeremy and Matilda and I went out driving around, to show me where things are, such as the swimming pool, park/playground, grocery stores, library, pediatrician office, etc. Jeremy and Jenny are planning a motorcycle trip and I'm staying with Matilda and Lola the dog. Woo Hoo!!

First stop was the park/playground. The temperature was low 50's and the sun was out--the first day in many that it was nice to be outdoors.  There were several little people there with their big people. I think there were maybe a dozen or so children between 14 months and 4 years of age. This playground has smaller equipment--slides with steps instead of ladders, and lots of smaller things to climb on. Matilda is growing tall enough that she's learning to "walk" up steps, and the handrails were almost right for her. So much fun to watch her figure things out.

She sat on the swing with Daddy and squealed with delight as they went back and forth. We played about a half hour, and she was done.  Back in the car.

We drove to the other locations, stopped into the pediatrician's office to add my name as a care authorizor, and went back home.

Daddy gave her a snack and put her down for nap.

Jeremy and Jenny prepared a delicious meal for us. We all had supper, I gave Matilda her bath and put her to bed.

What a gift.

Tomorrow we're going out somewhere to do something. That's about what I know about it.

Thank you for reading. Hugs.

Thursday 01.30.2014

I see I didn't post the last few days.  I knew I had missed last night and the night before---

Tuesday I worked another 12 1/2 hour shift, then came home to put my suitcase together and get finished up for my trip.  Jeremy called saying his shop had closed down at 1pm Tuesday, and was not going to be open on Wednesday due to the forecasted winter storm. Savannah was predicted to receive ice, sleet, and some snow.

I turned on the Weather Channel about 9:30pm and began watching. Eww, it sure wasn't looking good. I had my bags ready, but was thinking about alternate options. I really didn't want to be able to leave Detroit and not be able to get out of Charlotte. I was riveted to the Weather Channel until about 0100 Wednesday morning. I had been checking the airline's website, and the Charlotte to Savannah flight showed it was cancelled.  Ugh.

So I called the airline's phone number, was on hold over 20 minutes, but it was finally my turn, and a nice lady connected the line.

She looked up my itinerary and said the flight was showing as active on her end. We talked about changing the outbound flight to Thursday; I looked on my computer and she looked on hers and told me it would be an extra $30+  to change the flights. Did I want to do that??

Just then, the Weather Channel's radar updated, and the newest radar showed the storm moving beyond both Charlotte and Savannah. I figured that by the time I was there, (12:30 ish pm)  the weather would have kind of resolved, and decided not to change the flights, and to go with my current itinerary. I thanked her very much for her time and took myself to bed for a 3 hour nap.

When I looked at the Weather Channel again it was the same radar loop, until 0500 when the next programming started (Wake Up With Al, I think it was called).  The updated information was amazing--Atlanta was still frozen in place, and it was still zero degrees and below in Michigan.

I got to the airport in good time, found a parking place, (wrote it down so I could find my car again), got into the terminal and through security, and settled in to wait for the flight, which was On Time.

In Charlotte, there were lots of people in lines trying to reschedule the flights that had been cancelled the previous day.  The 2 morning flights to Savannah had been cancelled, and my flight was the first one to be going. It was a small 50-seat plane, and it was full. (There was no "jetway"-- we had to go outdoors down the steps, and then up the steps into the plane. Never done that before...)  The gentleman behind me made a phone call after getting in his seat--he was last one on--and said "I'm finally on a plane. Can you believe it--it's been 40 hours..."  Yikes.

That was exactly what I did not want to experience.

But it worked out fine for me.

Jeremy and Matilda were waiting for me, and she smiled when I spoke to her. It was good to see Jeremy, and when we got back to the house, Jenny, too.

I've had a great visit so far.  It's cold here--29 at night, 34 today. They only got an hour or so of freezing rain. It's strange to see ice on the plants and vehicles, and icicles hanging from the mailboxes.

Tomorrow is predicted to be high 30's.

My sinuses and ears feel swollen today. I've taken tylenol and motrin, used a nasal inhaler, and drank a bunch of water. I do think it's better tonight.

I'm hugging 'em while I got 'em.

Monday 01.27.2014

Got up and went in for the last day of the Ed Fair.  We had a great turnout, with only maybe 4 of 120 of our staff not attending these last 4 days. The majority were smiling when they left. Yay!!

The Wild West is disassembled; the items I took in are home and put away.

I'm also mostly ready to pack for my trip to South Carolina on Wednesday.

Tomorrow is a workday; wouldn't it be nice to be able to stay home, or at least leave early tomorrow afternoon???

Thank you for reading. Hugs.

Sunday 01.26.2014 Blogger is Back....

Having read some forums about the Blogger being "broken",  it seems that there were server issues. I found that I could still publish the title, so I did.

The last couple of days were busy with our Education Fair. It's going well, and we're getting positive feedback from our staff, and from other managers and department heads who have been invited over to see our Wild West themed event.

Today is catch-up day. I've been out for a few groceries, gotten clothing picked out for the trip to South Carolina on Wednesday, made the corn muffins for our lunch tomorrow.

Frank came over and shoveled the driveway again. (When I had gotten home on Saturday it had been shoveled, too. He's awesome!!)  I made a plate of scrambled eggs with cheese and wilted greens for him, that he gobbled up. Gotta feed the help!! We had a nice visit before he went on his way.

A quiet night.

Thank you for reading. Hugs.

Thursday 01.23.2014

We had a great day today--the Ed Fair went well for both sessions.

Tomorrow we're doing 3 sessions, getting up early and not leaving there until after 10pm. Yup, it's a long day, but we are committed to our staff (and ourselves) and believe that education is vital for appropriate care-giving.

Thank you for reading. Hugs.

Wednesday 01.22.2014

Had a great morning, and later in the afternoon I went up to the hospital to set up for the Ed Fair, which starts tomorrow.

It was fun to see what we had talked about, put on paper, and envisioned, emerge.  Everyone brought their contributions and some brought helpers, too. Together we created an old Western town, complete with a camp fire, tee pee, general store, jail, school house, saloon, Doc's Office, and a ghost town. There's probably a couple that I left out, too.  Jenny's Junction, we call it, after our department head. We created a "brand", and have bandanas is hospital colors. All this to make mandatory annual comptencies less of a drudgery for us all.

And tomorrow starts with two sessions.

I hope it goes well.

Tuesday 01.21.2014

So glad to be done with the two work days. Getting up at 0420-ish sure interrupts my sleep time.

Although we had a good day today, with a great crew.

Tomorrow afternoon we set up for the Ed Fair, with the next several days devoted to the presentations.

Tired tonight, hoping to sleep/rest well.

Thank you for reading. Warm Hugs.

Monday 01.20.2014

Another Great Day!

Wasn't "too" busy at the J.O.B.  In fact, was able to complete one (of many) of the mandatory competencies that we need to do on an annual basis. And, I was able to enjoy my meals today.  Bonus!

Tomorrow is another work day. Hope for the best!

Thank you for reading. Hugs.

Sunday 01.19.2014

Another Great Day!!

3 loads of laundry washed, dried, ironed, put away.

Frank came over this afternoon for a nice visit. He received a dinner invite while he was here, and was suggested he could bring a desert. It just so happened that he had left a "tub" of cookie dough (from a fund raiser) in my fridge a couple weeks ago, and we baked cookies before he left.

A quiet evening.

Tomorrow is a work day.

Thank you for reading. Hugs.

Saturday 01.18.2014

Another Great Day!!

An enjoyable afternoon with all the sibs and in-laws. It was nice to be "just us".

A safe drive home, thank you God.

Tomorrow is laundry and other chores.

Hopefully NOT shoveling.  I love the snow, but....

Friday 01.17.2014

What a great day today!!

Went in for a meeting--got a lot accomplished, and pretty much ready for our Education Fair next week.  Of course there will be odds and ends to pull together, but so far it looks good!

Errands on the way home.

Fixed food and ate, and rested a little before going out to shovel. Procrastinated, really.

But it wasn't as bad as I had thought it might be. It was about 3 inches again, and had blown over to maybe 5 inches in places. And the plow had been by. And I had driven on it. As I was shoveling, I felt snow on my face. I looked up.  Really?!?! AGAIN??!???!  But it was just a few flurries.

Back inside I finished chores, had phone calls, and had a quiet night.

Tomorrow I'm looking forward to seeing my sibs and sibs-by-law.  Everyone drive carefully----

Thank you for reading. Hugs.

Thursday 01.16.2014

Constantly moving; seemingly frequent noises of telephones, pagers, voices. Never-ending.

Was happy to see the next shift so I could get my documentation done.

I cleared about 3-4 inches of snow from the car before driving home. I'll be shoveling tomorrow.

And I have a morning meeting.

Thank you for reading. Hugs.

Wednesday 01.15.2014

Worked today with a great crew.  Oddly busy and we all pulled together and made it happen.

Tired tonight.

Get to do it again tomorrow. Go Team!!

Thank you for reading. Hugs.

Tuesday 01.14.2014

Another great day!

Went for a run in the sun--it was so nice.  Even at 27 degrees. The sun was warm and the birds were noisy.

Breakfast, shower, and off to the dentist for another good check up/cleaning.

Browsed around a couple of stores on the way home.

Supper, chores.

Tomorrow is a work day.

Thank you for reading. Hugs.

Monday 01.13.2014

What a day.

Got up and went to the meeting. Getting things finalized for the Education Fair for our staff.

Got the errands done, and back at home I fixed food and ate.

I had a quiet rest of the day, reading, doing computer stuff. Seems never ending...

Temps mid-40's today; there are areas where the snow is gone and bare ground/grass is showing.  Amazing.

Tomorrow I hope to get out for a run if it's not iced up again, and have a dental cleaning in the afternoon.

Thank you for reading. Hugs.

Sunday 01.12.2014

Started out a little more busy this morning.  And the first half of the day was steady, and before I knew it, it was after one o'clock and I needed lunch. Ugh.

But I was able to take a break, and it turned around from there. We had discharges, and a couple admissions to replace them, and we had a nice afternoon.

I got really tired about 5 ish; about the same time a physician came around and I assisted her with a procedure. *sigh*  All went well, and it was pleasant to work with her.

Finally clocked out.

A couple phone calls and a quiet night.

Tomorrow is a meeting and errands to follow.

Our snow is disappearing fast, with temps in the mid 30's.

Thank you for reading. Hugs.

Saturday, January 11, 2014

Saturday 01.11.2014

Worked today.

And we had a good day.

The first one in what seems to be a very long time.

Came home to a whole lot of snow melted, and a mailbox full of mail. I don't often get mail--this stuff must have been stalled by the storms. Happy to finally receive it.

Hope tomorrow will be as nice.

Thank you for reading. Hugs.

Friday 01.10.2014

Yay!! I finally feel good today!!  Thank you, God!!

I was dismayed when I looked out and saw more snow today, though.  The positives--there wasn't much--maybe not even an inch, but enough to cover everything with a fresh layer of white.

Breakfast, then business stuff on the computer. I managed to get done what I needed to do.

Then I needed to go outdoors.

A lot more pleasant at 35 degrees than it has been.  I shoveled the thin layer, and found the edges of the driveway.

This is what I ended up with--

With the temps predicted to be so much warmer, I expect the rest will be gone by  morning.

The snow was just right for packing...

These won't last long either.

Tomorrow is a work day.

Thank you for reading. Hugs.

Thursday 01.09.2014

What a great day today!!

The sun was out and temps made it to 20 degrees!!

I got up and went to the meeting, which was good. Got home, and had a quiet rest of the day.  Still not feeling one hundred percent.

Tomorrow is another day.

Thank you for reading. Hugs.

Wednesday 01.08.2014

Wow, am I tired tonight.

Got up and went to work, felt pretty good even though I didn't sleep much/well. Partly because I knew I was there only until noon, partly because I was having a massage at 2, and I didn't have anything else in the evening.

But about 0930 I got really tired.

It turned out that instead of someone absorbing my (full) patient assignment, (along with her own), someone was coming in to follow me. That made me feel somewhat better--I absorbed the patient load yesterday when someone left at the end of their partial shift. So I continued on, trying to get the "flow" into the "work flow".

I did ok, and when she arrived I had a work list organized for her, which she seemed to appreciate.  And I was done with my "extra hours".

Home, changed clothes, up to Mason.

A lovely massage, where the magical Leah found the most tension ever, I think, in the years that she's been working with me. I felt much better when I left. Thank you, Leah.

A safe drive home, thank you God. The temps were mid teens with a mostly sunny sky, and it was really quite pretty with all the snow. And the highway was clear and mostly dry, too.

Back home, I was hungry and needed to prepare food. I wanted soup--and made a pot of creamy broccoli with onion, celery, green pepper, parmesan cheese. It was really good, and I have 5 containers in the fridge/freezer for future consumption. Go Me!!

Cleaned up the kitchen and had a quiet evening.  I was surprised when I stood up that my hips hurt--oh, yes, Leah worked on something in my lower back.....ugh.... That will be much better by morning.

And I have a 0900 meeting.

Thank you for reading. Hugs.

Tuesday 01.07.2014

Didn't sleep much, and still not feeling 100% this morning.

Got up and went to work in  -17 degree weather. Thankful the car starts. (Of course, I love having the "magic button" to remotely start the vehicle.) It probably helped that it was in the garage.

Wasn't so sure I should have gone in, though. The morning was a little rough, what with feeling a little dizzy and just plain yucky. A couple of times I even wondered if I was going to throw up....

Yikes.

But I didn't, and I finally needed to eat lunch. At 3 o'clock.

And after a small amount of soup and a few crackers, I got back at it.

It had been busy all day, and the other person in my job role left for the day, so I absorbed her patients along with my own.

I got everything done just after 7pm--and then needed to document it all.

To my surprise, I finally finished about 8:30.  (I might get talked to about that one....)  Anyway, thankful again that the car started, what with being outside in the sub-zero winds, and a ride over to the parking lot.

A quiet night.

And I agreed to work the first six hours tomorrow to help out.

I have a massage tomorrow afternoon to make it aalllll better.  *sigh*

Stay warm. Hugs.

The bottom half of my driveway this morning...

Monday 01.06.2014

Yup, missed posting last night.

After I had written Saturday night, my tummy started feeling "not-so-good".

And I had several hours of "sudden intestinal decompression".

That left me "wiped out" -- pun intended.

I ended up sleeping most of the day Sunday, as well as all of Sunday night and most of the day Sunday. Frank came over sometime Sunday afternoon and shoveled the 10 or so inches of snow out of the driveway.

Which was great.

But you sure couldn't tell this morning that it had been shoveled.

I was real shaky feeling, and knew that I couldn't get out of the garage, and that I could probably get a ride in to the hospital if I could walk to the main road.  There was no way I was going to be able to do that, the way I was feeling.

I called in to work about 0330.

And looked out the window.

Wow!!  That's a lot of snow!!

And it was blowing.

Who cares--a drink of water and back to bed for me.

I finally got up around 9 I think.

Feeling somewhat better.

And hungry.

A half of a banana, and rumble rumble.

But everything seemed to be ok, and I have been able to eat some throughout the day.

I even bundled up and went out to inspect the end of the driveway after the plow had gone by, thinking I would maybe just open that up...

Uh, no.

First, I had to push the snow with the door just to get out.

Shoveled off the porch, and realized the snow was up to the porch--I had to dig with the shovel to find the steps. This is not good.

No way can I shovel all of this.

I got a path to the garage and went in to warm up my hands. Geesh--   -2 is pretty cold...

I walked--trudged, rather-- to the end of the driveway, through a couple of drifts all the way across the driveway that were at least 3 1/2 feet deep, and pretty wide. No way can I shovel this.

And the snowplow stuff was another foot or so on top of all of it.

As I went back up the driveway I was thinking of who I could call, and also, marveling at how beautiful all this snow is.

I made a couple of calls, received a commitment from a friend, and left a message with the lawn service that I use. They were both busy, but whoever could get to it first had the job, and I told them both that.

The lawn service guy called a few hours later, saying he was on the way to my area, and did I still need him. YES!!  And he arrived about 8 ish. 20 minutes later the driveway is open and those drifts are cut through. Amazing!  Thank you JMS!!

Of course I had called the other person and thanked them, so that they didn't come out, too. There are many more driveways that need done.

I love having the layer of snow on the roof.  My house is staying much warmer, and I've actually turned the thermostat down several degrees. Even with sub-zero temperatures and wind.

Tomorrow I'll have to work.

My gut is much better, and even though it's rumbled, there's been no liquid with it.

I'm ready to go back to sleep.

Stay warm, shovel safely.

Thank you for reading. Hugs.

Saturday 01.04.2014

Went to Flint today to visit Aunt Etta Mary.

And to pick up a snow blower.

Fred was there, putting the carburetor back on, not looking happy.

Uh oh.

Bottom line--runs good, but leaking fuel from carburetor.

Frank and I helped Fred get it loaded into Fred's truck so he could take it home and work on it "properly--in my shop".

I don't want it if it's not working right...

I had a nice visit with A EM while the guys were fussing with the machine, and we all had a nice soup dinner when they were done.

Drove through a couple of slippery areas on the way back, but arrived safely, thank you God.

Snowing here, wondering how much accumulation in the morning.

Thank you for reading. Hugs.

Friday 01.03.2014

I started out this morning "on call".   Then got the phone call to come in and float.  Then another that I could stay home.  And at 0620--ring ring--you need to come in, there was a call-in upstairs and they'll need you after all.....

So I finished getting ready and went in.

I had a nice day with an elderly gentleman who had gotten suddenly confused. All tests had been negative. He was "restless" in the bed, and had been falling. My job was to keep him safe and on the bed. He was easily re-directed, and I didn't have any problems with him. I just jumped up from the chair frequently to re-direct.

When he was lucid he was a great joke teller. And he frequently would put his hand out, either picking "something" up or giving me "something", usually some kind of tool. And then he'd fall asleep. So odd how the brain does.

Tomorrow I have errands.

Thank you for reading. Hugs.

Thursday 01.02.2014

I did it!!

Took about 3 1/2 hours, but I got the driveway shoveled.  This is what I started with....

Oh, yes, I'm tired.

And a little sore in the shoulders, and hands.

Of course I paced myself, took my time, and had to take a break about 2 1/2 hours into it. After a rest, some food, water, and a phone call, it had gotten dark and the temp had fallen 10 degrees down to 7, and the wind had picked up. I was dressed warmly and am happy to say I'm done.

Though the plow hasn't been by yet.

I'll be able to get out of the driveway to go to work tomorrow.

Hope you all are warm in this winter blast!

Thank you for reading. Hugs.

Wednesday 01.01.2014 New Year

Quite a day!!

Worked. Census dropped, we staffed down to one other person and myself.  Geesh--the census fluctuation amazes me.

Tired tonight.

Tomorrow I'll be shoveling. There was another inch this morning when I left for work, and a total of maybe 4 or 5 inches when I got back this evening. I'm hoping that with it being so cold (low teens/single digits) that it will be light and fluffy.

Great first day of the year.

Thank you for reading. Hugs.
